Limitation Imposed by Polarization-Dependent Loss on a Fiber Optic Communication System

چکیده
Analytically the effect of polarization dependent loss on a high speed fiber optic communication link has been investigated. significant co-relation between them and their various combinations produces different effects on the system behavior which has been together to observe the attenuation effect induced by PDL in a link containing multiple PDL elements. It is found that in the presence of PDL the Q-factor and BER at the receiver undergoes fluctuation causing the system to be unstable and results show that it is mainly due to optical signal-to-parallel-noise ratio (OSNRpar) that these parameters fluctuate. Generally the Q-factor, BER deteriorates as the value of average PDL in the link increases except for depolarized light for which the system parameters improves when PDL increases.

Non-intrusive polarization dependent loss monitoring in fiber-optic transmission systems
A method for non-intrusively monitoring the polarization dependent loss (PDL) of an installed fiber-optic transmission system is proposed using live dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM)-based traffic as the probing signal. The method extracts the statistical parameters of system PDL from the measured partial PDL data. Field measurements of PDL were performed on long-haul DWDM systems deploye...

We propose a new space-time coding scheme designed to increase the tolerance of fiber-optic communications systems to polarization dependent loss (PDL). A notable increase in the tolerable amount of average link PDL is achieved without affecting the complexity of the overall optical communications link. Other advantages include seamless integration with the broadly deployed blind equalization m...

Very long span optical communications are mainly limited by the chromatic dispersion (CD) or group velocity dispersion (GVD), fiber nonlinearities, and optical amplifier noise (Agrawal 2005). Different frequencies of a pulse travel with their own velocities, which involves a pulse spreading. In a fiber-optic communication system, information is transmitted within a fiber by using a coded sequen...

In coherent optical communications, PDL is one of the major linear impairments that can seriously impact systems performance. From an information-theoretic point of view, said PDL has to be analyzed through the so-called outage probability. After deriving this outage probability in closed-form expression for various statistical PDL models, we check these models’ accuracy numerically against a p...

Although the advances of digital signal processor (DSP) make impairment compensation for the coherent systems become possi...
